[Grammar] Why use an THE in front of same?

Hello

Why do we have to use the THE in front of SAME?

Examples are,

A and B are the same.
A is the same as B

* I mistyped the title. Why use a THE in front of SAME

Examples are,

A and B are the same.
A is the sames as B

the same = XP; X = ?
the yellow :cross:
the French :tick:

Never mind! I am just toying with English.

the same (thing)

A and B are the identical :cross:
A and B are the same. :tick:
A and B are identical. :tick:
A and B are same. :?:

'the same' = adjectival idiom?

Why do we have to use the THE in front of SAME?
That's a fair question given that we say, "A and B are different/similar", without the article. "Same" could have evolved in the same way, but it didn't.
