Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

He figures he's got you scared and he's gonna take a sock(1) at you the first chance he gets." Lennie's eyes were frightened. "I don't want no trouble," he said plaintively. "Don't let him sock(2) me, George."

(1) sock (n) = a hard blow or punch
(2) sock (v) = to hit or strike forcefully; punch

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V.

Your interpretation is right. As a noun 'sock' has two other meanings.
Sock = clothing
Sock (n)=used to tell someone to be quiet or stop making so much noise

Hey, put a sock in it, will you? I'm working here.

The expression ‘Put a sock in it’, meaning 'Leave off talking, singing or shouting'
put a sock in it = to shut up. usually expressed in the form of a request.
Will you put a sock in it? I'm trying to study here.

Now you put a stock in it, Alfie, see? Or else I shall forget I’m a lady and lose my temper.
put a stock in it = stop talking, stop your gab!

He stands six foot in his stock. He is high six foot (He is in height six foot.)
Be (stand) six foot in his stock = be high six foot

pull one's socks up = brace one’s energies

Regards,

V.
