Hi,
What's the difference between these two phrases?
give in vs give up
Thanks.
***** NOT A TEACHER *****
Good morning, Ferdie:
(1) Maybe two examples might help you a LITTLE bit to understand the difference:
(a) Tom loves ice cream, but he has not eaten any for a year. He does
not want to eat any ice cream for various reasons. Yesterday, his wife
brought home some ice cream. Tom was tempted to eat some, but he
told himself no. He thought about it all day. It was on his mind all day.
Finally, he ran to the refrigerator, opened the ice cream carton, and ate
three bowls of delicious ice cream. Poor Tom! He HAD GIVEN IN to the
temptation.

(b) Mona has a son who will not clean up his room. Mona does everything
that she can to get him to clean it up. On Monday, she promised him his
favorite meal if he would clean it up. He didn't. On Tuesday, she bought
him a CD of his favorite music. Her kindness did not get him to clean up
his room. On Wednesday, Mona cried and cried. She thought that her
crying would soften his heart. It did not. On Thursday, she said, "If you
clean your room, I will buy you a -- car!!! Nothing happened. So on
Friday, Mona said, "OK. I GIVE UP. You win! I will never talk to you again
about your messy room. You are hopeless.
