    an extract from the Archers - "I just need to make sure that he and I are both batting on the same wicket" What does it mean?

    I don't think so. It depends on the fuller context, but 'sticky wicket' doesn't fit, in my opinion.

    It means he needs to be sure that they're playing on the same team; or that they're both striving for the same outcome.

    The Archers' scriptwriters aren't an impeccable source. Because of the importance of the village cricket team, they used the words in a strange way. In metaphor, wickets are usually sticky, but Raymott is obviously right.

    I thought of that, and also the expression 'on the same page', but the 'wicket' idiom has more of the idea of having the same tools and having to operate in the same environment. 'In the same boat' is a bit nearer, but that has more of a sense of having to survive (by 'pulling together'). There's also the expression 'on a level playing field' - but that is used when different people have different conditions (and a change in the law, for example, makes the situation fairer).
