    wannabe

    Hello,

Is there a "no slang" version of wannabe?
    He's a wannabe professional.

    I didn't find something like:
He's a want to be professional

In case someone doesn't understand the meaning of "wannabe".
He tries to play the professional although he has no clue.

    Cheers!

    *** NOT A TEACHER ***

Here's an article in which Professor David Crystal explained the origin and the use of "wannabe", but I'm afraid he didn't come up with a word you are looking for. (How about: "want-to-be"? Though it wouldn't make too much difference. )

At a guess: faker/aspirer (fake/aspirant). You had better wait for a teacher!

    Not a teacher at all
