    wannabe

    Hello,

    Is there a "no slang" version of wannabe?
    He's a wannabe professional.

    I didn't find something like:
    He's a want to be professional

    In case someone doesn't understand the meaning of "wannabe".
    He tries to play the professional although he has no clue.

    Here's an article in which Professor David Crystal explained the origin and the use of "wannabe", but I'm afraid he didn't come up with a word you are looking for. (How about: "want-to-be"? Though it wouldn't make too much difference. )
