Cool to get the plane airborne

What's the meaning of "he gets the plane airborne"?

Mercenaries are trying to fly away once wrapped up the mission

Quite confusing sentence. Is it just referring to get a plane to fly away? The problem is this "airborne" at the end. It seems a noun, but the word can only be an adverb or an adjective ?

    Thank You
