    Please check this sentence

    Japan's goalkeeper dived towards right to punch the ball but ball passed by him on his left straight into the net

    Japan's goalkeeper dived to the right to punch the ball away, but the ball passed by him on/to his left, straight into the net!

    My suggestion is above. I believe that in football, it's usually said that one "punches the ball away" though I'm sure there's a football expert out there who can confirm or deny this.

    Note the use of commas (and a full stop) in my version.

    The ball passed him on/to his left. In this way we can understand it clearly. But "by him" its not good for me and it seems wrong.
