Smile Kill our way out of...

I've read this statement on nytimes.com "We can not kill our way out of the Afgan wars" and "There's no way the American can kill its way out of the conflict". I wonder what it means. Does it say that the American can not just run away from the war and its consequences or does it have other meanings?

    Thanks a lot

It seems to mean that America cannot win the war just by killing people.
