    Basic grammar questions.

    1. He is going to do the laundry and then to drive her to the school.

    2. They developed a new technique of image processing and of audio processing.

In the above sentences, do we need to or of? Why?

    Thank you very much!

    Re: Basic grammar questions.

    Thanks.

But, it seems that sometimes people add to or of or other prepositions when they put two or more things together. Could you please give me some examples of these or tell me when they are necessary or not? I'm still kind of confused.

Or let me put it the other way, is it 100 percent safe to add or not to add like prepositions stuff?

    Hi!

The explanation for that is the following:
In the first sentence, and is a coordinator. It's coordinating two verbs, DO and Drive. Thus, the first to is for both do and drive and the second is not necessary.
The same with 2. it is not necessary to write of and processing twice.
your sentence would be better this way:
They developed a new technique of image andaudio processing.

    Re: Basic grammar questions.

How about this sentence? The original content is:

He consciously trained himself to view each such interaction as an opportunity to forge a relationship with the employee and to reinforce his idea of company culture with emphasis on independence and innovation.

Why do we need to here? To me, the only difference between this sentence and the other one I posted earlier is that this one is much longer.

    Thx.

    Re: Basic grammar questions.

    Dear friend:
    I'd like to know:
Where did you take the sentence from? (was it made by a native speaker?)

    regards.

I guess it is written by a native speaker. I found this article at here "http://techcrunch.com/2010/04/10/how-to-be-happy-at-work-and-to-deal-with-that-jerk-boss/".

    Re: Basic grammar questions.

Well, I don't have the answer. Tomorrow I'll ask my grammar teacher for it. However, I know that if you're coordinating two verbs you don't have to use "to" twice. Maybe the writer wasn't a native speaker ...
maybe the writer wants to be emphatic...I don't know.
