It seems that there is no single English word for the Spanish gregario, which describes one who unquestioningly and unthinkingly follows the herd. Can anyone think of one ?
Note that the Spanish word is not the same as the English gregarious.
Joiner?
That word does not connote (to me) the idea of the unthinking nature of the described person; it merely describes one with a pre-disposition to join him/her-self to a group.
I seek a word which emphasises the idea of just drifting-along with the crowd, never questioning.
In the Southern US you call that a tag-along.
tag-along is a regional colloquialism though, not a canonical English word.
You did not specify this requirement.Originally Posted by mounty
'Stooge', 'toady' or 'sidekick' are all in that area, but not exactly synonyms. 'Follower' can be used with that sense, but it doesn't have to have the negative connotation, which would normally be shown by saying 'just a follower'. I can't think of an exact match at the moment.![]()

After checking out many possible words, I still do not get the appropriate one.Originally Posted by mounty
As you have said, "gregarious" do not match the spanish meaning. I will follow looking for a way out!
