[Vocabulary] Motto vs. Slogan

Hey all

I just want to ask about the difference between Slogan and Motto. Are they interchangeable ?

For me, I have seen slogan used in political context but im not sure about motto.

They are a bit different. A slogan is usually used to try to sell something, whether it's a loaf of bread or a political party.

A motto is usually a phrase or saying that's associated with an institution - normally either something they believe in as a principle, or just some motivational words perhaps.

Examples of slogans:

Beans Means Heinz (Heinz Baked Beans)
For mash, get Smash (Smash mashed potato)
Britain Deserves Better (Labour Party, UK, 1997)
The Power to be Your Best (Apple)

Examples of mottos:

Dieu et Mon Droit (UK Government/Home Office) (God and my right)
Honi Soit qui Mal y pense (UK Government/Home Office) (Evil be to him who evil thinks)
Carpe Diem (my personal motto!) (Seize the day)
Citius, Altius, Fortius (The Olympic Games) (Faster, Higher, Stronger)

They're not.

"Be prepared." Motto of the Boy Scouts
"We never sleep." Motto of the Pinkerton National Detective Agency
"To protect and to serve." Motto of the Los Angeles Police Department


As a rule, mottos are static - they are a permanent declaration by the organization or company. Slogans change; for example Alka-Seltzer has had many famous slogans over the years:
"Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is."
"Mama mia, that's-a spicy meatball."
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing."

Well, if it were in Welsh, only about 3 people (and some Patagonians) would understand it. Seeing as the British Royal Family are more German than they are British, makes sense for it to be in German!
