    -ed ending:

    If the stem of the word ends with either a "t" or "d" sound, then the -ed is pronounced as an extra syllable, and sounds like "id".

    Want - want'id (2 syallables)

    If the stem ends with an unvoiced sound (s, sh, k, p, x), then the -ed is shortened to just the sound of the "d" but it sounds like a "t"

    Miss - miss't (1 syllable)

    If the stem ends with a voiced sound (all the others), then the -ed is shortened to just the sound of the "d" and it sounds like a "d".

    Harm - harm'd (1 syllable)
