I thought it is a very good exercise in language learning. The teacher dictates the notes slowly and the students listen and write them down.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****
Hello, Tedmc.
(1) I found that many serious and dedicated students liked dictation
and FELT it was very helpful.
(2) The teacher would dictate a sentence.
(3) The students would write it.
(4) A volunteer would then go to the chalk-, whiteboard to write it.
(5) Other students would judge the accuracy of his/her sentence.
(6) In that way, some students that day would get an idea of
their strengths and weaknesses in spelling.
(7) In other words: "Practice makes perfect."

Maybe I heard wrong, but they say that students in French schools
have dictation (every day?), and that many people seem to believe that
this dictation helps students to better understand their beautiful
language.
***** Thank you *****
