which is correct?

He was taking a sick day today?

OR

He took a sick day today?

Number2:

I have a lot of allowed weight limit that I won't use?
OR
I have a lot of space still available that I wouldn't be using?

Not a teacher.

"He took a sick day" would be the more natural expression.

For the second choice, "space" and "weight" are not the same thing. The sentences are not equivalent.

So you are saying that "He was taking a sick day today"
is correct ?

I feel as if it is wrong.

because he already took the sick day.

I wouldn't say "he was taking a sick day." I would say "he is taking a sick day" if I didn't say "He took a sick day."

The only time I think I would say "he was taking..." would be if he knew in advance that he was going to be sick. Or a company had a policy that sick days had to be used or forfeited. Then you might say (to a third party) "John is coming in today cause he was taking a sick day today."
