    makings = endowment

    Dear teachers,

    Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

    She would marry a Prime Minister and stand at the top of a staircase; the perfect hostess he called her (she had cried over it in her bedroom), she had the makings of the perfect hostess, he said.

    makings = endowment

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

    It means the attributes or qualities of the perfect hostess.

    I think it means she has the attributes or qualities necessary to become a perfect hostess whens she gets older (grows up?) and marries.
