    How can I say?

dear teachers how can I say, for example I am at the restaurant and a waiter asks me what I want to eat as meat? and I ordered a met and he brings me a meat and I want to ask him if this meat beef, chicken or ham that is to say how can ask, or is this true way to ask:

Is this meat beef or ham?

and how can I ask in different ways in order to learn what kind of meat is this?

I hope I can have understood what I mean?

    Thanks in advance...

It might be better to ask before you order the food.
"Do you have beef?" "Do you have chicken?" "How is the beef prepared?"
Rare, middle and well-done beef are very common!

Which reminds me of my home-town, this old man, very polite, answered the waitress:

    - Mr Lucas, how would you like the soup? maybe a bowl?
    - No, I want it on the floor, bring it with a squeegee!

I am puzzled, what exactly did you tell the waiter? Any meat?
It sounds strange that you asked only after he had brought the meat as if you let him decide for you.

    not a teacher

Yes, in a restaurant, you generally get what you order.
However, if you are a guest in someone's house, they could serve you what they've prepared, and you might want to know what's in it.

    You can say:
"What sort of meat is this?"
"Is there any ham in this? I'm afraid I don't eat ham".

Of course, you could guess and say, "Is this veal or mutton?" and the host would answer, "That's beef". Only a smart alec host would reply with "No it isn't".
