It was the park in which I saw him.

    1. It was the park in which I saw him.
    2. It was the park which I saw him in.
    3. It was the park that I saw him in.
    4. It was the park I saw him in.
Which of the above sentences is not acceptable?

As far as general usage is concerned, you'll hear all of them! Also "It was the park where I saw him".

You may find people (still) who say that you can't end a sentence with a preposition so they may think 2, 3 and 4 are wrong, but that "rule" was either a myth or it's been superceded because we certainly regularly have a preposition at the end of a sentence.

    ********** NOT A TEACHER **********

    Hello, Teacher Sitifan:

    (1) I thought you would be interested in this information from the

authoritative A COMPREHENSIVE GRAMMAR OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

    by Professor Quirk et al.:

John wore a suit AT THE DANCE. =

It was AT THE DANCE that John wore a suit. (formal)

It was THE DANCE that John wore a suit AT. (informal)

    *****

    Your sentence is:

I saw him IN THE PARK.

I most respectfully suggest that you might wish to consider:

    (a) It was IN THE PARK that I saw him.

    or (more informally)

(b ) It was the park that I saw him in.

    THANK YOU
