    They (=firefighterw) knew very well the great personal risk they were taking.For every person they could not help , nine more were helped to safety."In my eyes every is contradictory to nine.What about you?Thanks!

    I'm not sure what you mean by contradictory.

    "For every one, nine were..." means 10% fell into one category but 90% fell into the other.

    It sets up a proportion or percentage -- it's not literally talking about only 10 people total.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
