I was proud of my memory and disliked having it prompted. So I sat staring at the diary, as at a blank space in a crossword puzlle. Still no light came.

What can I say for light?

    Not a teacher.

The condition you are describing, if I understand you, can be called "writer's block."

So, "still I had writer's block."

    Or "my mind went blank."

Or even "the words would not come."

You could change light to inspiration.
