    contemplating the accumulation

I should not be sitting in this drab, flowerless room, where the curtains were not even drawn to hide the cold rain beating on the windows, or contemplating the accumulation of the past and the duty it imposed on me to sort it out.

Could you help me with the signed part?

Thinking about the past and how all the things that have happened in the past have built up to this point. The writer now feels an obligation to sort out the result of all those things that have happened up until now.
