    How come...?

    Hey,
Is this is a common and grammatically correct sentence?
How come he can stay here?

Is it a short form of:
How does it come he can stay here?

I've never heard a sentence like the 2nd one yet...

    Cheers!

    As far as I'm concerned;
How come can he stay here?
    or
I can't understand how come he can stay here.

    Hello, Nightmare.

    (1) I hope that you had a nice vacation.

    (2) Yes, you seem to be correct: your sentence is an example

    of ellipsis.

    (3) Here is a similar example from the famous grammar book written

    by Professor Quirk and colleagues:

    How come you're so late?

    =

How does it come about that you're so late?

    (4) As you said, people do not speak like that.

    Thank you
