    except or except for?

    Dear friends,
    Are there any differences between except and except for? It seems that both of them are quite similar. Am I right?

    All countries are members of APEC, except/except for X.

    In your example they are basically equivalent. In other cases one or the other should be used. There is a good explanation at this website.
