    check these sentances

    which one is correct?

    You would have met guests if you had at home in the morning while they came around.

    or

    You would have met guests if you had at home in the morning when they came around.

    In my opinion sentence 2 (with been!) is the right choice.

    You're welcome.

    Usually while is used to express any long (or short) activities.

    Coming around isn't a short or a long activity.
    You can say:
    You would have met guests if you had been at home in the morning while they were camping in front of your house.
    This is a real activity (a progress) because takes time and something is being done.

    Or some other examples:
    He tried to call me while I was working.
    He tried to call me when I was at home.
    I was watching TV while it was raining outside. - (That's why the signal was low.)
    I was watching TV when there was a power blackout.

    Can you see the difference?
