Is the following a correct sentence?

Is the following a correct sentence? My main concern is the use of "of" between "experience" and "being". Thanks.

“The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane is an actual account of his life experience of being on a life boat at sea.

"His" doesn't necessarily refer to Crane, though a wider context might imply that.
Your sentence makes it sound like Crane has had a lifetime of experience in lifeboats! Maybe "life-changing experience", if that's true.

I can't see a problem with 'of' though. Perhaps "surviving" would be better than "being".
