    There = many definitions including: location; introduction to clause; See:

    there - definition of there by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

    Their = belonging to them.

    These two words are frequently confused by native speakers in writing, because they sound exactly the same when spoken.

    . . .And to confuse you even further they're (a contraction of they are) is also pronounced the same way.

    Good point, and now I think about it, it's probably "they're" and "their" that are more frequently mixed up.

    Ray, if you never make a mistake with they're and their or there, you will be far ahead of most native speakers!

    Note, though, that "a lot" is two words.
    I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    I always pronounced "they're" with the /j/ sound, so it sounded different from "there" and "their". Is it wrong?

    They all sound very much the same to me, except that sometimes "they're" has a vowel is a bit more like the sound in "hey!" and not as much like the sound in "bear."
