Hi City Gal and welcome to Using English.

The word "years" is possessive. Does that help you to answer your own question?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Therefore it will be this?

    Compare previous year's league positions.

    Re: Help with puctuation

Because it doesn't have "the" with year, I was assuming years was plural, so you need years'.

If you are using a headline-style and omitting the articles, then it could be year's.

    Re: Help with puctuation

    Then it's certainly plural.
