    not to return

    Hello
"He and his wife were leaving for Switzerland in the morning, not to return"

What does not to return mean? Will they immigrate?

    Thanks

Not necessarily immigrate, but it means they will not return from where they left.

Sorry, but should that say "they will not return to where they left from", as opposed to "return from". The place they left is Switzerland, and they are not planning to return [to] there, not return from Switzerland!

Doesn't the sentence say they are going to Switzerland?

Apologies, I misread the original sentence. I missed the word "for" and thought it said "...leaving Switzerland".

However, "not to return" still means that they don't plan to come back to wherever it is they were before they left to go to Switzerland.
