    have committed herself so far

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

…and indeed in later days Miss Sharp would never have committed herself so far as to advance opinions, the untruth of which would have been so easily detected.

commit oneself so far = fall into disrepute

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V.

Re: have committed herself so far

Not a teacher only a native.

…and indeed in later days Miss Sharp would never have committed herself so far as to advance opinions, the untruth of which would have been so easily detected.

From the extract, I would say 'committed herself so far' suggests Miss Sharp had just expressed an opinion, however 'in later days' she wouldn't be so bold as she might be found out to be lying. Normally Miss Sharp was reserved or quiet, not venturing an opinion, however in this case she did.

For example she might have been bluffing. I don't know the context but this is how I would interpret the quote.

Hope this helps, if not please let me know. Of course I might have misinterpreted the phrase, but I think I'm right. Hopefully a teacher will clear things up.
