    Synonyms for project, undertaking, enterprise...

I'm looking for a fairly formal word describing a project (especially business one) that is not in an advanced state of realization and is not specified partcularly. The following words have come up to my mind: undertaking, initiative, and I'm not sure about intent. Thank you for help!

Intent is a synonym of purpose or aim.
For project, There's Enterprise, venture, plan, scheme besides undertaking. I would rule out initiative.

Not a teacher only a native.

From your description I would say your project is in the 'planning stage' or 'preliminary stage'. Maybe you are conducting a 'feasibility study'?

Hope this helps, please post if you don't understand anything or want further clarification.

I do think both initiative and undertaking could work, though.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

    Thank your for help!

I need a single word that expresses "project at an initial stage" best and can be used to describe a business entity. It is more like a proposition of a project.

From what you've said it seems that "undertaking" is the best choice. Are you sure that intention can't be used in this context?

I'm sure that "intention" won't work.

There's nothing inherent in either initiative or undertaking that tells you that it has just started, though.

If it's a proposal, it hasn't started at all.

Everything else is simply in the initial or preliminary stages, whether it's a project, an undertaking, and initiative, or a program.

Or you could be more specific (in the case of an engineering project): 'It's only at proof-of-concept stage.' (If you didn't object to business clichés, you could 'run it up the flagpole and see if anyone salutes' - but that is far from formal).
