    as many as

Does the construction "times as many as" function as the same as comperative "than"?

Is the sentence 'Up to four times as many women as men died in the Boxing Day Asian tsunami' saying the same thing as 'The Asian tsunami killed up to four times more women than men' ?

    Thanks in advance.

    Re: as many as

You're right in your understanding of the numerical question.

However to say 'x people died in the tsunami' is not the same thing as saying 'the tsunami killed x people'.
