Regarding the use of article (again)

Sentence: "Regan was a/thepolitician who defeating USSR in diplomacy"

My question: Sorry again a question on article. What article, a or the, would be correct to use in the sentence ? I've zeroed in on article "a" but not sure, though. Please help.

    Regards and thanks

Do you mean "I've zeroed in on a/an/the article"?

Whether you use the indefinite or definite will entirely depend on context in this example. However, are you sure you mean "a" (before the word "article")?

Thanks for replying . I should have put the article "the" before the word article. Missed somehow, my bad. Thanks for pointing out. That's typical of teachers.

You do need an article before "politician."

Was the the only one? The politician.
Was he one of two more? A politician.

    But defeated, and the USSR.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
