    about"from"

When I read the website, I do'nt understand how to use「from」。
1)The blooms die off from the herb.
I think 「from」here means[separeted].But the bloom is part of the herb. Why is that?
2)Cut the stem or branches that are away from the plant.
The stem or branch are part of plant, too. Why is 「away from 」is used ?

The blooms are part of the herb until they fall off from the herb. The herb then exists without blooms until it flowers next
    .

They are away from the main part of the plant.

If you hold your hands up, you can hold them close to your face, or away from you face. They are still attached to you.
