Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

And then I’ll be good and not open my head again….

.. he hardly opened his head for the whole twenty-one miles.

open one’s head = twaddle, chatter, jabber

Open one's head sounds very wrong. I'd suggest that the phrase that would mean chatter would be open one's mouth.


Where did you find "open one's head"? Can you give us some idea of the context or the source?

He was American, and died about sixty years ago. I would suggest that his use of language shouldn't be considered a standard for modern British English, which is why I raised eyebrows at the wording and queried the source, so that I could comment on it more accurately for you.

Gosh yes, they are very different indeed :-D

New England may be called England but it is very certainly American.
