More recently, the trade emphasis has been at the heart of American efforts at "engagement" with politically unpopular regimes-
I wonder what does it mean by the words "more recently" Please clarify it to me.

It must be referring to something that went before, in the previous sentence.

I think they are saying that America has been using trade to try to engage with "unfriendly" regimes. This has been done very recently. More recently than the things discussed earlier in the article.

I think they are saying that America has been using trade to try to engage with "unfriendly" regimes. This has been done very recently. More recently than the things discussed earlier in the article.

So I may assume that "more recently" would mean "happen not long ago and more than the aforesaid referred thing",right?
