What's the meaning of the underlined?

As an analyst at a bulge bracket firm, you can expect starting salary between...and a year-end bonus of ...to....Although this sounds like a lot of cash, remember that most sales and trading opportunities are in the New York City, where $45,000 doesn't always get you very far.

It means that $45,000 is not a lot of money in New York City, it's an expensive place to live.

For info, we also use "go [very] far" when talking about amounts of money or other things which might not last long.

I have 20 people coming for dinner but I only have one loaf of bread. That's not going to go far!

My salary is now up to $20,000 but these days that doesn't go very far.
