Thumbs up Please help with an article

By not drinking tea and coffee help you keep yourself away from an obesity(More than average fatness).

So, is "an" needed before obesity? I put it in there since it is a noun, and every noun must be addressed with an article.
    This is what I understand.

    Please clarify my doubt.

    Not a teacher.

No article should be used. Your sentence would be clearer like this:

"Abstaining from coffee and tea helps you avoid obesity."

...every noun must be addressed with an article.
Who told you that, ihop? It's quite wrong.

Dave has given a good answer, as usual.

I can't help feeling, though, that there are more effective ways of combating obesity than cutting out tea and coffee.

If it were only that simple!

Thumbs up Re: Please help with an article

    Thanks dave and Rover.

I really worked too hard to learn articles, but I guess am still missing out a few concepts of it.

But please could you explain me why article can't be used in my original sentence? I mean please provide me some good tips if possible.

One more thing, the refactored sentence is really good. I am certainly going to use "Abstaining from coffee and tea helps you avoid obesity" from now on.

One more thing, I feel drinking coffee and tea may not be healthy if consumed too much, and may increase your weight(just my two cents).

But please could you explain to me why an article can't be used in my original sentence?

One handy tip (not an inflexible rule) is that 'article' is countable and needs an article, whereas 'obesity' is uncountable and doesn't.

If you drink it Indian style, that is with a lot of sugar, it could certainly increase your weight.

Re: Please help with an article

You don't use an article because obesity, as a concept, is not countable.
