    This sounds more like a proverb to me than an idiom.

    I've never heard it, and the previous poster is right, it sounds more like a proverb anyway. It's also grammatically incorrect. If it exists, I would expect:

    It is better to have no friends than foolish friends.

    *Not a teacher

    This sounds like a French proverb often used here, which literally means: it is far better to be alone than with foolish people (or a foolish person such as your GF or your BF or your friend(s)) OR it is worse to be with foolish people than alone. The French version: "Il vaut mieux être seul(e) que mal accompagné(e)" -(for feminine version)
