Hello!

Could anyone help me out with the following three sentences:

1) The mall will / is going to open next week.

2) The next Olympic Games will / are going to be held in China.

3) The new highway will / is going to connect City A and City B.

What would be the correct choise(s) in these three sentences, and what would the reasoning behind them be? If done grammatcially correct, will the answer be the same in all three, and could both choises be used in one or more of the examples?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Tbentsen.

(1) As the teacher told you in the first post, either answer is

correct.

(2) I wish, however, to offer some advice that I usually try to follow.

Use will

for promise (I will meet you at 3 p.m.)
for determination (He will do as I say!)
for emphasis (Flying will never be cheap again.)
for condition (John will lend me $50 -- if I ask him.)
for immediate decision. (Oh, you're cold? No problem. I will just turn off the a/c.)
for formality (The wedding will take place tomorrow. More formal than "is going to take place tomorrow.")

Use be going to

for predicting the future (I am sure that you are going to get the job).
for definite plans (I am going to the beach this weekend).
for knowing someone's intentions (John is going to lend me $50 -- because he told me yesterday that he would).
for signs of something that is about to happen (Look at those clouds! It's
going to rain in a few minutes).

*****

(3) In your three sentences, probably a government announcement

would use will because of its formality.

(4) Maybe in ordinary conversation, "regular" people would be more

comfortable with be going to. Your three sentences seem to indicate

"definite plans."

THANK YOU
