    taken

    - Does "Im taken" mean "Im committed to somebody"? If so, isnt there a chance of being misunderstood?

    Re: taken

    Not a teacher.

If you ask a girl if you can buy her a drink/dinner, etc., and she says she's already "taken," yes that is what she means.

    Re: taken

You'll come across this in other situations, too.

If you spotted an empty seat on a crowded train, you'd ask, "Is this seat taken?" and hear,
"Yes, my husband's just gone to the buffet car," or, "No, it's free."

In other words, if it's taken, someone has already laid claim to it even if they're not using it at that moment.
