what I was doing= what I should do afterwards?

I first began to wonder what I was doing on a college campus anyway when my parents drove off, leaving me standing pitifully in a parking lot, wanting nothing more than to find my way safely to my dorm room.

Some of my friends say that in this sentence 'what I was doing' means 'what I should do in the future'. But I would think 'what I was doing' means nothing more than 'what I was doing at the time'. Am I right?

    Thank you in advance.

Some of my friends say that in this sentence 'what I was doing' means 'what I should do in the future'. No, it doesn't. But I would think 'what I was doing' means nothing more than 'what I was doing at the time'. Am I right? No, it means 'why I was here'.
In that sentence, 'what I was doing on a college campus' means 'why I was here on a college campus'.
    Thank you in advance.
