If you are searching for an apartment, for example, you are perhaps looking for somewhere to live.
If you are searching an apartment, you are looking through everything in the apartment to try to find something, perhaps lost or hidden there.

    Furher to what bhaisahab said.....

You search for something you hope to find. "something" can be a thing, a person, an animal, some information, etc.

You search a place for the thing(s) you hope to find and/or anything that you might find.
