Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

“Barton, may I trouble you for a potato,” interrupted the master of the house hopping to nip his guest’s story in the bud.

check in the bud = crush in the bud = nip in the bud = stop from the very beginning

Thanks for your efforts.

Regards,

V

If you nip anything in the bud, you stop it as soon as it starts.
I've never seen "check in the bud" nor "crush in the bud", but perhaps they're US English.
