    I took that in

All I could do was shake my head, so Lara continued, saying, “Casnoffs ruled the Council for nearly two hundred years. However, my father made the decision very early on to pass his title to your father, due to his powers.”

I took that in. ?? “But the title is hereditary. So if your dad hadn’t done that, you would have been the head?”

    Not a teacher.

"Took that in" means that the person thought about what was just said. The took the words into their mind. When there is a significant or complex idea that we encounter, it sometimes takes some time to understand the information. We have to "take it in."
