    a black-letter day

    Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

The day Poland was invaded was a black-letter day for the world.

    a black-letter day = a tragic day

    Thanks for your efforts.

    Regards,

    V

    Re: a black-letter day

    Correct.

That phrase is non-standard, but appears to be an invented opposite of the set phrase red-letter day.
