Do you know any thorough works about it that I could get without too much trouble?

Some month ago I was looking for the meanings of some old English words. I found The Samuel Johnson's Dictionary (1755) on the Internet. I noticed that there were some old English grammars, too. I can't help you precisely in that you are asking for, I can point out what I found. These are:
William Bullokar's: Pamphlet for Grammar (1586)
Robert Lowth's: A Short Introduction for English Grammar with .....(1741);
William Cobbett's: A Grammar of the English (1824-1866).
May be the information is a little help to you, but who knows.
S.M.

Thank you for your effort, I'll try looking for them. But I'd rather have a contemporary work...

Thanks. It's not thorough enough but still, I learned new things.
