Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expression in bold in the following sentence?

I don’t know what’s to become of our fine family name, after it’s been dragged through the mire by a complete outsider.

drag someb0dy through the mire = slander somebody

Yes, but bear in mind that slander is a false statement. You can drag someone through the mire by telling unpleasnt truths about them, as well.
In American English, it is more common to drag somebody through the mud.
