what's the meaning of the underlined?

    Dear all,

what's the meaning of the underlined?

    Thanks in advance.

“I’d like to go into the Greek’s and get me a double chocolate malted with eggs in it,” said the kid. He bobbed up to keep a little wavelet out of his mouth. “This place is lonely. I like Coney.”
“Too full of people,” said Sligo.
“This place is lonely, ” said the kid.
“Talking about the Series, I’d like to do that myself,” said Sligo. “It’s times like this a fella (fellow) gets kind of tempted to go over the hill.”
“Suppose you went over the hill – where the hell would you go?”
“I’d go home,” said Sligo. “I’d go to the Series. I’d be first in the bleaches, like I was in ’40.”

    Bleachers, not bleaches.

Bleachers are seats where people sit to watch sporting events. They are talking about the World Series (baseball). He would be the first one into the stadium to watch the game.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.

I would like to add that bleachers are generally long, wooden benches without back supports, where the spectators are frequently exposed to the sun. The seats are very cheap and very uncomfortable.

Back in the 40s, though, weren't most of the seats bleachers?

In the late 40´s, my father and I sat in the grandstands at the Polo Grounds, Ebbets Field and Yankee Stadium, as we were both very susceptible to sunburn. Who had heard of SPF in those days? I imagine Barb_D is right as far as farm team and Minor League stadiums are concerned. That is probably still the case today.

Where there are bleachers, they are generally aluminum, and even more uncomfortable.

    Especially if it's cold.
