    admitting nurse; profesionally strangled

...Yet he was also other things: a thorn in the side of the chairman of his department; a physician whose role at the hospital had been reduced to that of an admitting nurse...If he was a genius, he was a professionally strangled, socially awkward....

    1. What does "admitting" mean here? What is an "admitting nurse"?
    2. What does it mean by "professionally strangled"?

    1. Admitting nurse is one that admits patients into the hospital: takes all the personal info, usually weighs them, asks thousands of questions and tells them what tests need to be done.
    2. He was professionally "muzzled" - if I understand well (only guessing) others put many obstacles on his professional career, made it difficult for him to advance, impeded his chances for a successful career.
