What does the sentence below mean? Was he the eldest son? And why was 'for nothing' used?
He was not the eldest son of his father for nothing.
Thank you in advance.

Here is my interpretation of the key phrase “for nothing”.
for nothing = to no avail: (useless) (it didn’t him a lot of good)
In my opinion the sentence in question “He was not the eldest son of his father for nothing.” has to be “He was the eldest son of his father for nothing.” So it makes sense.
