Smile Have had it for X years.

Hi, I am not a teacher.

I recently read this: I have had a dog for 5 years.

The writer continues to have the dog. To me, it sounds correct but I read somewhere that "for 5 years" should not be used with "have had". Are there any other obscure rules about using "have had"?

    Thank you.

    This is perfectly correct.

    You were misinformed.
